COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes in Biodiversity Conservation is structured to provide advanced research training alongside key knowledge in conservation science. Core modules include Conservation Priorities, which examines how conservation efforts are prioritised based on ecological importance, species risk, habitat condition, and resource allocation. Research Methods and Data Analysis forms a central component of the programme, equipping students with advanced skills in designing scientific studies, collecting robust data, and applying statistical techniques to interpret ecological information accurately. The Research Project (MRes) is the major element of the course, allowing students to conduct an independent, in-depth investigation into a specific area of biodiversity conservation, often involving fieldwork, data analysis, and applied problem-solving relevant to real-world environmental challenges. In addition to the core structure, students can select from optional modules to tailor their learning according to career interests and specialisations. These optional modules include Vegetation Survey and Assessment, which focuses on identifying and evaluating plant communities and habitat quality; Environmental Assessment and Consultancy, which develops skills in environmental impact evaluation and professional advisory work; Protected Species Surveying, which trains students in techniques for monitoring and protecting legally sensitive species; and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), which introduces spatial mapping and analysis tools used widely in conservation planning. Together, these modules provide a flexible yet rigorous pathway for developing expertise in ecological research and applied conservation practice.
