COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Applied Ecology and Geospatial Techniques programme provides a specialist curriculum that combines ecological science, fieldwork, data analysis, and advanced geospatial technologies. Students develop practical expertise in Protected Species Surveying, learning the methods and techniques used to identify, monitor, and assess protected wildlife species and their habitats. The Geographical Information Systems (GIS) module introduces essential spatial analysis and mapping skills, enabling students to manage, visualise, and interpret environmental data. Through Applied Population Ecology, students explore the dynamics of wildlife populations and develop the ability to assess factors influencing species distribution, abundance, and conservation status. The Applied Spatial Ecology module focuses on understanding ecological patterns and processes across landscapes, helping students evaluate the relationships between species, habitats, and environmental change. Advanced technological skills are further developed through Remote Sensing and Advanced Geographical Information Systems, where students learn to utilise satellite imagery, remote sensing data, and sophisticated spatial analysis techniques for environmental monitoring and conservation planning. Research Methods and Data Analysis equips students with the quantitative, statistical, and analytical skills required to conduct rigorous scientific investigations. The programme culminates in a substantial Research Project, allowing students to undertake an independent study on a specialised ecological or geospatial topic. Together, these modules provide a strong blend of scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in ecology, conservation, environmental consultancy, biodiversity management, geospatial analysis, and environmental research.
