COURSE CURRICULUM

This postgraduate physics-based course combines advanced taught modules with a major year-long research project, allowing students to develop deep specialist knowledge and strong independent research skills in a chosen area of physics or imaging science. The core of the program is the Research Project, a substantial 120-credit component where students work full-time on an experimental or theoretical investigation aligned with a topic offered by academic research teams, enabling them to contribute to real scientific research under expert supervision. Alongside this, the Professional Physicist module focuses on developing essential research competencies, including scientific methodology, ethical considerations, literature review skills, and the critical evaluation of existing research, ensuring students are well prepared to conduct high-quality independent work. Another key component is Current Topics in Physics, which exposes students to cutting-edge and emerging areas of physics that reflect the ongoing research interests of academic staff. These topics may include fields such as liquid crystal properties and devices, soft condensed matter physics, laser processing of nanomaterials, optical photonics, fluid dynamics in complex systems, space weather, acoustics, astrophysics, cosmological models, and advanced computational techniques used in areas like art conservation. In addition to these core modules, students select one optional module to tailor their learning according to their interests and career goals. Options include Medical Imaging, which focuses on diagnostic imaging technologies such as MRI, CT, ultrasound, and X-ray systems; Imaging Matter: From Atoms to Galaxies, which explores imaging techniques across a wide range of scales from materials science to astrophysics; Advanced Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Computing, which introduces modern quantum theory and computational applications; and Science Communication, which develops the ability to effectively communicate complex scientific ideas to both specialist and general audiences. Overall, the course is designed to blend advanced theoretical knowledge, exposure to frontier research topics, and extensive hands-on research experience, preparing students for careers in scientific research, industry, or further doctoral study.
