COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Pharmacology curriculum combines advanced scientific study with extensive independent research, providing students with a strong foundation in pharmacology, neuroscience, and modern biomedical research methods. The Research Methods and Bioethics module develops essential research competencies by introducing students to literature review techniques, research design, project planning, data analysis, and scientific presentation. The module also examines ethical issues in scientific research, helping students understand ethical governance requirements and the processes involved in obtaining ethical approval for research projects. These skills provide the foundation for conducting high-quality, responsible scientific research. The Research Project forms the central component of the programme and offers students the opportunity to undertake an extensive investigation of an original research question under the supervision of an experienced academic. Students develop a detailed research proposal, design experiments and computational approaches, maintain comprehensive records of research methods and protocols, and apply advanced analytical techniques to address their chosen research objectives. The project culminates in the production of a written thesis and a professional poster presentation, allowing students to demonstrate their scientific, analytical, and communication skills. For MRes students, progress is additionally assessed through an interim written report and oral presentation. The Pharmacology module explores the relationship between genetics, physiology, and pharmacological responses to therapeutic drugs. Students examine how genetic variation influences drug effectiveness and safety, while developing an understanding of personalised medicine and the future of tailored therapeutic approaches based on an individual’s genetic profile. This module highlights the growing importance of precision medicine in modern healthcare and drug development. The Neurophysiology module investigates contemporary topics in molecular and cellular neuroscience through the analysis of current scientific literature. Areas of study include neuronal pathways involved in behaviour, mechanisms of neural degeneration, neurotoxicity, and recent advances in understanding neurological and psychiatric disorders. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive understanding of drug action, biological systems, neuroscience, and scientific research methodologies. The combination of advanced theoretical knowledge, research expertise, and extensive laboratory-based investigation prepares graduates for careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, biomedical and neuroscience research, healthcare organisations, regulatory sectors, and doctoral-level study, while equipping them with the analytical and practical skills required to contribute to future developments in pharmacological science.
