The MSc Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Science curriculum combines advanced study in medicinal chemistry, drug discovery, and pharmaceutical research with extensive practical and independent research experience. The Organic Synthesis and Characterisation of Biologically Active Compounds module develops advanced knowledge of the synthesis and structural analysis of complex organic molecules relevant to pharmaceutical and medicinal applications. Students explore retrosynthetic analysis, total synthesis of biologically important compounds, controlled carbon–carbon bond formation, functional group transformations, and methods used to determine and characterise molecular structures. The Computational Chemistry and Drug Design module introduces the principles of molecular modelling and computational approaches used in contemporary drug discovery. Students examine quantum chemical methods, molecular properties, and computer-based techniques for designing, predicting, and optimising potential drug molecules. The module also critically evaluates the strengths and limitations of modern computational tools in pharmaceutical research, helping students understand how these technologies support the development of innovative medicines. The Research Methods and Independent Study module develops the essential skills required for successful scientific investigation and independent learning. Students learn how to formulate research questions, design research projects, conduct comprehensive literature reviews, utilise scientific databases and library resources, and apply relevant information technology tools to support research activities. These skills provide the foundation for undertaking advanced scientific research and critical evaluation of published literature. The programme culminates in a substantial Research Project, which represents the major component of the degree and provides extensive laboratory-based research experience. Under the guidance of an academic supervisor, students investigate a specialised topic in pharmaceutical or medicinal science, review relevant scientific literature, design and conduct experimental studies, analyse and interpret research findings, and evaluate the significance of their results. Students communicate their work through professional presentations, scientific posters, and a detailed written thesis, developing valuable scientific communication and project management skills. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive understanding of medicinal chemistry, organic synthesis, computational drug design, and scientific research.
