COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Pharmaceutical Analysis curriculum combines advanced scientific study with extensive research training to develop the knowledge, technical expertise, and analytical skills required for careers in the pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnology, and research sectors. The Organic Synthesis and Characterisation of Biologically Active Compounds module provides an in-depth understanding of the synthesis of complex organic molecules and the principles underlying modern organic chemistry. Students study retrosynthetic analysis, total synthesis of biologically important compounds, controlled carbon–carbon bond formation, functional group transformations, and advanced methods for the structural elucidation and characterisation of complex molecules. This module develops the theoretical and practical skills necessary for the design and synthesis of compounds relevant to pharmaceutical and biological applications. The Drug Detection Analysis and Screening module focuses on analytical chemistry techniques used in the detection, identification, screening, and analysis of drugs and drug-containing materials. Students gain an understanding of standard analytical methods employed within pharmaceutical and forensic laboratories, developing the ability to apply analytical principles to real-world challenges involving drug analysis and quality assessment. The Research Methods and Independent Study module provides essential preparation for independent scientific research by introducing key research methodologies, project planning techniques, literature review strategies, and information retrieval skills. Students develop competence in using library resources, scientific databases, and relevant information technology tools while learning how to formulate research questions, critically evaluate scientific literature, and design effective research projects. The programme culminates in a substantial Research Project, which forms the major component of the degree and provides extensive laboratory-based research experience. Working under academic supervision, students investigate a specialised research topic, conduct comprehensive reviews of relevant scientific literature, design and perform experimental studies, analyse and interpret results, and evaluate their findings within a scientific context. Students communicate their research through professional presentations, scientific posters, and a detailed written thesis, developing valuable skills in scientific communication and dissemination. Together, these modules provide a strong foundation in organic synthesis, pharmaceutical analysis, analytical chemistry, and independent research. The combination of advanced theoretical knowledge, laboratory training, and substantial research experience prepares graduates for professional roles in pharmaceutical development, analytical laboratories, quality control, regulatory affairs, biotechnology, forensic science, and scientific research, as well as further doctoral-level study.
