COURSE CURRICULUM
The Neuropharmacology Master’s programme combines advanced taught modules with extensive independent research to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of neuroscience, neuropharmacology, and modern research practices. The Research Methods and Bioethics module develops essential research skills by introducing students to literature review techniques, research design, project planning, data analysis, and scientific presentation. Students also examine ethical issues in scientific research and learn the procedures for obtaining ethical approval in accordance with institutional governance requirements. The Research Project forms the core of the programme and allows students to undertake an in-depth investigation of an original research question under the supervision of an experienced academic. Students prepare a detailed research proposal, design and conduct experiments or computational studies, maintain a professional record of research methods and protocols, and communicate their findings through a dissertation and poster presentation. MRes students additionally complete an interim written report and oral presentation to evaluate research progress. The Cognitive Neuroscience module explores fundamental concepts and current developments in the field, including perception, brain structure and organisation, memory, cognition, and the neurological and psychiatric mechanisms underlying human behaviour. Students also gain insight into advanced research methodologies and technologies used in contemporary neuroscience research and industry. The Neurophysiology module examines key topics in molecular and cellular neuroscience through the analysis of current scientific literature. Areas of study may include neuronal pathways involved in behaviour, mechanisms of neural degeneration, neurotoxicity, and recent advances in understanding neurological and psychiatric disorders. Together, these modules provide students with a strong foundation in neuroscience theory, laboratory and analytical techniques, scientific communication, and independent research. The programme develops critical thinking, experimental design, data interpretation, and problem-solving abilities while providing valuable hands-on research experience. Graduates emerge with advanced scientific knowledge, professional research skills, and practical expertise that prepare them for careers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, and bioscience sectors, as well as for doctoral study and other research-intensive opportunities.
