The Molecular Biology postgraduate programme is structured around a combination of core theoretical training, advanced laboratory and computational techniques, and a major independent research project, providing students with both academic depth and practical research experience. A key component is the Research Methods and Bioethics module, which develops essential skills in literature review, research design, data analysis, and scientific communication, while also introducing important ethical considerations in biological research, including governance procedures and ethical approval processes. Alongside this, students undertake a substantial 120-credit Research Project, which forms the central focus of the programme. In this project, students work closely with an academic supervisor at NTU to develop an original research question, design and carry out experiments or computational investigations, and produce a detailed written thesis along with a poster presentation. The project is designed to simulate real scientific research practice, often including interim reports and oral presentations to assess progress, while also encouraging students to maintain a detailed record of methods and protocols to support their professional development. In addition to the research component, students study Molecular Biology, which consolidates and extends knowledge of key biological processes, including genome mutation, gene expression, epigenetics, transcriptomics, DNA sequencing technologies, and gene therapy applications. This module highlights how modern molecular techniques are applied in understanding and treating disease. Another important element is Techniques in Macromolecular Analysis, which focuses on advanced laboratory and computational methods used to isolate, analyse, and interpret the structure and function of macromolecules. This includes the use of bioinformatics tools, simulation strategies, and data interpretation techniques to support modern biological research. Overall, the programme is designed to develop highly skilled graduates with strong research capability, advanced technical expertise, and a deep understanding of molecular biology, preparing them for careers in biotechnology, biomedical research, healthcare industries, or further doctoral-level study.
