This MRes in Medical Imaging includes a combination of core and optional modules designed to build both technical expertise and research capability in imaging science. The core modules begin with Medical Imaging, which introduces key diagnostic and research imaging techniques such as MRI (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), ultrasound (sonography), computed tomography (CT), and X-ray imaging, along with their applications in medical diagnosis and image-processing research. Another core component is the Professional Physicist module, which focuses on essential scientific research skills, including research design, literature review methods, critical evaluation of published studies, and ethical considerations in scientific work, preparing students to operate as responsible and independent researchers. The most significant part of the program is the Research Project, a major 120-credit independent study where students undertake an extended experimental or theoretical investigation in a chosen area of imaging science, typically aligned with ongoing research conducted by academic teams. Alongside these, students select one optional module to broaden their expertise. Options include Imaging Matter: From Atoms to Galaxies, which explores imaging techniques across scales from materials science to astronomy, including digital imaging, microscopy methods such as fluorescence and confocal imaging, and image enhancement techniques. Another option, Science Communication, develops the ability to explain complex scientific ideas clearly to both specialist and general audiences, often through outreach or practical communication activities in real-world settings. Alternatively, Business and Enterprise introduces students to innovation and entrepreneurship within the biosciences, covering topics such as product development, marketing, pricing, and launching new scientific ventures. Overall, the program blends advanced medical imaging knowledge, research training, and professional development skills to prepare students for careers in scientific research, imaging technology, or further academic study, rather than clinical or hospital-based practice.
