COURSE CURRICULUM
The Mathematical Sciences Masters programme is structured around a combination of core research training and carefully selected optional modules, with a strong emphasis on independent research and advanced mathematical thinking. At the centre of the course is a full-time, 10-month Research Project worth 120 credits, where students undertake an in-depth investigation in a chosen area of mathematical sciences under the supervision of academic staff specialising in fields such as mathematical modelling, partial differential equations, mathematical biology, combinatorics, graph theory, quantum computation, machine learning, computational statistics, or financial mathematics. This extended project allows students to experience the full research process, from developing a research question and reviewing literature to conducting analysis and presenting findings, preparing them for academic or industry-based research careers. Alongside this, students take a 20-credit Science Communication module, which focuses on developing the ability to explain complex and technical mathematical ideas to both specialist and non-specialist audiences in a clear and effective way. This includes practising communication skills in real-world or workplace-style environments such as outreach activities or applied settings. In addition to the core modules, students select one module from each of two optional sets to tailor their academic pathway. From Set 1, they may choose either Mathematical Recipes, which introduces applied mathematics concepts with a focus on topics such as Green’s functions, eigenfunction expansions, and integral transforms, highlighting their applications in physics and engineering, or Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, which develops understanding of modern statistical models and computational techniques used in real-world data analysis. From Set 2, students choose either Topics in Mathematical Biology, which explores mathematical approaches to biological systems and modelling, or Quantum Computing and Cryptography, which examines the mathematical foundations of quantum computation and secure communication systems. Overall, the programme is designed to combine advanced theoretical study with applied research experience, equipping students with strong analytical, computational, and communication skills. It prepares graduates for further academic research, including PhD study, as well as high-level roles in data science, modelling, finance, technology, and scientific research environments.
