COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes in Chemistry combines advanced research training with specialised subject options, allowing students to develop expertise in areas that align with their academic interests and career goals. The programme includes two core modules that form the foundation of the degree. Research Methods and Independent Study develops essential skills in scientific investigation, experimental design, critical evaluation of literature, data analysis, and independent learning, preparing students for advanced research activities. The Research Project is the central component of the programme, enabling students to undertake an extensive independent investigation under academic supervision. Through this project, students apply advanced laboratory techniques, problem-solving abilities, and analytical skills to explore a specialised area of chemistry in depth. To complement the core modules, students can select from a range of optional modules. Drug Detection Analysis and Screening focuses on analytical methods used to identify and monitor drugs and related compounds. Organic Synthesis and Characterisation of Biologically Active Compounds examines the design, preparation, and analysis of molecules with biological significance. Inorganic Chemistry Beyond the Molecule explores advanced concepts in inorganic systems and materials. Physical Properties of Materials investigates the structure and behaviour of materials and their practical applications. Computational Chemistry and Drug Design introduces computer-based techniques used in molecular modelling and pharmaceutical development, while Analytical Toxicology focuses on the detection and analysis of toxic substances. Together, these modules provide a flexible and research-driven education that prepares graduates for careers in chemistry, pharmaceuticals, research, and further academic study.
