COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes in Cancer Biology is designed to provide students with advanced research skills and specialised knowledge of the biological mechanisms underlying human disease, particularly cancer. The programme begins with Research Methods and Bioethics, which equips students with essential skills in scientific investigation, experimental design, data analysis, critical evaluation of research, and the ethical principles that guide biomedical and biological research. Cell Culture and Antibody Technology develops practical laboratory expertise in the cultivation and manipulation of cells, as well as the production and application of antibodies, both of which are fundamental techniques in cancer research, diagnostics, and therapeutic development. Biology of Disease explores the molecular, cellular, and physiological processes involved in the development and progression of diseases, providing students with a deeper understanding of pathological mechanisms and their relevance to cancer biology. The central component of the programme is the Research Project, which allows students to undertake an extensive independent investigation under the supervision of experienced researchers. This project provides valuable hands-on experience in laboratory research, data interpretation, problem-solving, and scientific communication while enabling students to explore a specialised area of cancer biology in depth. Together, these modules combine theoretical knowledge with practical research training, preparing graduates for careers in cancer research, biotechnology, pharmaceutical development, healthcare sciences, and further academic study, including doctoral research programmes.
