COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Biodiversity Conservation includes a set of core modules designed to build both theoretical understanding and practical field and analytical skills. Students begin with Conservation Priorities, which explores how and why certain species, habitats, and ecosystems are prioritised for protection, often based on ecological value, threat levels, and available resources. Vegetation Survey and Assessment develops skills in identifying plant communities and evaluating habitat condition using standard ecological methods. Environmental Assessment and Consultancy focuses on applying conservation knowledge in professional contexts, including impact assessments for development projects and advisory work. Protected Species Surveying trains students in techniques used to locate, monitor, and assess legally protected species, ensuring compliance with conservation legislation. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) introduces spatial analysis tools used to map habitats, track environmental change, and support decision-making in conservation planning. Research Methods and Data Analysis equips students with essential scientific skills for designing studies, collecting data, and interpreting results using statistical techniques. The programme concludes with a Research Project (MSc), where students independently investigate a chosen topic in biodiversity conservation, applying their learning to a real-world or field-based research question. Together, these modules provide a balanced combination of fieldwork, technical training, and research experience to prepare graduates for professional conservation roles.
