COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Applied Ecology and Geospatial Techniques programme is a research-focused postgraduate degree designed to develop advanced expertise in ecological science, environmental analysis, and geospatial technologies. The core curriculum centres on Research Methods and Data Analysis, where students gain essential skills in scientific investigation, statistical analysis, experimental design, critical evaluation of research literature, and the interpretation of complex ecological data. These skills provide a strong foundation for the Research Project, which forms the major component of the programme and allows students to undertake an extensive independent investigation within a specialised area of ecology or geospatial science. Working closely with academic supervisors, students apply advanced research techniques to address contemporary environmental and conservation challenges. To complement their research training, students can select from a range of optional modules that provide specialist knowledge and practical skills. These include Protected Species Surveying, which focuses on wildlife monitoring and conservation techniques; Geographical Information Systems (GIS), which develops spatial analysis and mapping capabilities; Applied Population Ecology, which examines population dynamics and conservation management; Applied Spatial Ecology, which explores ecological patterns across landscapes; and Remote Sensing and Advanced Geographical Information Systems, which introduces advanced technologies for environmental monitoring and analysis. This flexible programme enables students to tailor their learning to their interests while developing strong research, analytical, technical, and fieldwork skills, preparing them for careers in ecology, conservation, environmental consultancy, research, and doctoral study.
