COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Advanced Materials Chemistry programme provides a focused and research-intensive curriculum designed to develop advanced knowledge of materials chemistry and scientific investigation. Students begin by exploring the Physical Properties of Materials, gaining an understanding of how structural and chemical characteristics influence material behaviour, performance, and functionality in a range of applications. The Inorganic Chemistry Beyond the Molecule module examines advanced concepts in inorganic chemistry, exploring the structures, properties, and interactions of complex materials and solid-state systems. Alongside these specialist subjects, the Research Methods and Independent Study module equips students with essential research skills, including scientific analysis, critical evaluation of literature, experimental design, data interpretation, and professional communication. These skills prepare students for independent scientific inquiry and advanced laboratory work. The central component of the programme is the Research Project, which provides an opportunity to undertake an in-depth investigation within a specialised area of advanced materials chemistry. Working closely with academic supervisors, students apply theoretical knowledge and practical techniques to address contemporary research questions and develop innovative solutions. Throughout the programme, students gain experience in advanced laboratory methods, analytical techniques, and problem-solving approaches relevant to modern materials science. This combination of specialist knowledge and extensive research training prepares graduates for careers in scientific research, materials development, chemical industries, and further doctoral study in chemistry and related disciplines.
