COURSE CURRICULUM

The MFA Fine Art programme is structured to support the development of a critically engaged, sustainable, and professionally focused artistic practice through a series of interconnected modules that build progressively across the two-year course. In the autumn semester, Establishing Practice: Creative Ethics, Research & Ecologies provides the foundation for independent studio practice by encouraging self-reflection, ethical awareness, and environmental responsibility. Students examine how contemporary art operates within cultural, political, and global contexts while exploring audience engagement, international perspectives, and the decolonial potential of artistic practice. The module aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, promoting inclusive, socially conscious, and environmentally responsible approaches to art-making. Through a negotiated learning agreement and the development of an initial portfolio, students define their research interests and establish the direction of their future practice. In the spring semester, Expanding Practice: Studio Research & Production enables students to deepen their creative investigations through intensive studio-based research and production. Building on the foundations established earlier, students develop a coherent and critically informed body of work through experimentation with materials, methods, and concepts, supported by contextual research and reflective writing. The module continues to emphasise sustainability, global awareness, ethical practice, and audience engagement while encouraging the development of an individual artistic voice. Students may also choose from optional modules such as Professional Pathways in the Arts, which focuses on career planning, employability, and professional development within the creative industries, or Advancing Research Design: Maximising Your Methods, which develops advanced research methodologies and prepares students for research-based careers or doctoral study. In the summer semester, Realising Practice: Collaboration, Curation & Public Presentation focuses on the professional presentation of artistic work through exhibitions and public engagement. Students consolidate their practice through portfolio development, documentation, and verbal presentations while gaining experience in curation, collaboration, and audience interaction. The module encourages independent thinking, professional confidence, and self-directed practice, preparing graduates for careers as contemporary artists, curators, educators, cultural practitioners, or researchers. Together, these modules foster artistic excellence, critical inquiry, sustainability, and professional readiness within a contemporary global art context.
