COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA TESOL curriculum provides a comprehensive blend of language analysis, teaching methodology, curriculum design, second language acquisition, and educational research, preparing students for professional careers in English language teaching and related fields. Investigating Language in Use develops the ability to analyse how language functions in real-world contexts, covering key areas of linguistic analysis that are essential for English language teachers. Students learn how a deeper understanding of language systems can improve classroom teaching and support learners’ language development. Depending on their level of teaching experience, students study either Developing Classroom Practice or Extending Classroom Practice. Developing Classroom Practice is designed for novice teachers and focuses on language teaching methodologies, lesson planning, classroom management, and practical teaching skills, helping students build confidence and competence in delivering effective lessons. Extending Classroom Practice is intended for experienced teachers and encourages critical reflection on current teaching approaches while exploring innovative pedagogical methods and classroom strategies. Analysing Second Language Learning examines theories and research related to language acquisition, enabling students to critically evaluate teaching methods using evidence-based approaches and apply research findings to improve teaching effectiveness. Designing Courses and Assessments focuses on syllabus development, curriculum planning, course design, assessment strategies, and programme evaluation, equipping students with the skills needed to create effective English language courses tailored to specific learner groups. The programme also includes a substantial Research Methods component that introduces qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method research approaches, supporting students in designing and conducting original research projects. This learning culminates in either a dissertation or a practical project of approximately 10,000 words, allowing students to investigate a TESOL-related topic in depth or develop professional outputs such as teaching materials, curriculum designs, or educational resources. Throughout the programme, students strengthen their research, analytical, communication, teaching, and professional skills while gaining valuable practical and theoretical knowledge. Collectively, these modules prepare graduates for careers in English language teaching, teacher training, curriculum and materials development, educational management, academic support, language programme administration, and international education, while also providing a strong foundation for further research and professional advancement in the field of TESOL.
