COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Interior Architecture and Design at Nottingham Trent University is a studio-based postgraduate programme that develops advanced skills in spatial, interior, and architectural design through a combination of creative practice, research, and critical thinking. The course is designed for graduates and professionals who want to explore how interior environments can be transformed to address contemporary social, cultural, environmental, and technological challenges. Design Studio 1 introduces the fundamental principles of interior architecture and design, helping students strengthen their creativity, contextual awareness, and problem-solving abilities while connecting theory with practice through exploratory projects. Students develop design concepts and communication skills using a variety of visual and technical methods to create culturally and contextually responsive spatial solutions. The Design Research and Practice module enhances understanding of research methodologies, academic writing, professional practice, and evidence-based design thinking, preparing students for advanced independent study and professional development. Building on this foundation, Design Studio 2 focuses on adaptive reuse and sustainable design, requiring students to analyse existing buildings, integrate innovative technologies, and respond to changing human behaviours, ergonomic requirements, and socio-cultural needs. The module encourages exploration of sustainability, carbon reduction, lifecycle thinking, and holistic design strategies while helping students identify specialist interests and prepare for the university’s degree show. The Major Study Project serves as the culmination of the programme, allowing students to pursue a personalised pathway through either a Detailed Design Study Project, Design Consultancy Report, or Design Thesis. This independent project enables students to apply advanced research, design, and professional skills to an area aligned with their interests and career goals. Throughout the course, strong emphasis is placed on creativity, research-led design, sustainability, critical reflection, and innovation. Graduates leave with a professional portfolio, advanced technical and conceptual skills, and the ability to create thoughtful, sustainable, and impactful interior environments, preparing them for careers in interior architecture, spatial design, design consultancy, adaptive reuse, commercial and residential design, or further academic and research opportunities.
