COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Fashion Design programme is structured around three core modules that combine specialist practice, innovation, research, and collaboration to support the development of an individual creative identity and professional direction. The first module, Situating Your Practice, introduces students to specialist studio resources, practical workshops, and digital technologies relevant to their discipline. Fashion and knitwear students receive training in industry-standard CAD knitwear software such as Shima and Stoll, while also having opportunities to expand their expertise through additional workshops beyond their existing skill set. Through experimentation, critical reflection, and discussion-based tutorials, students evaluate their design practice, consider issues of design responsibility and audience engagement, and develop a proposal for a major project. The Innovation in Fashion Practice module forms the centrepiece of the programme and allows students to transform their initial concepts into a substantial independent project aligned with their personal and professional ambitions. Whether preparing for advanced research, employment in the fashion industry, or launching a business, students work closely with a specialist supervisor to develop a distinctive body of work. The module emphasises rigorous research, innovative three-dimensional design development, and the creation of final outcomes that effectively communicate a unique creative vision to a targeted audience. The Culture and Collaboration module broadens students’ perspectives by exploring the cultural, social, and intellectual contexts that shape contemporary art and design. Working collaboratively with Master's students from across the School of Art and Design, participants investigate themes connected to current debates and challenges within creative practice, contributing to a collective festival of ideas. This process develops advanced skills in research, critical analysis, communication, presentation, and interdisciplinary teamwork. Students may also choose optional modules such as Professional Futures, which supports career planning and professional development, or Advancing Research Design: Maximising Your Methods, which strengthens research skills and methodologies. Overall, the programme encourages innovation, critical thinking, technical excellence, and creative risk-taking while preparing graduates for careers in fashion design, creative industries, entrepreneurship, research, or further academic study.
