COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Fashion and Creative Pattern Cutting programme is structured around three core modules that develop advanced technical expertise, creative innovation, and professional practice within contemporary fashion design. The Innovative Pattern Cutting Methods module builds upon existing knowledge of garment construction and pattern development, challenging students to move beyond conventional approaches through experimentation and creative exploration. Students investigate advanced pattern-cutting techniques, examine the relationship between fabric, silhouette, and form, and explore how emerging technologies can transform pattern development processes. The module also incorporates research-led practice and sustainability considerations, encouraging students to create innovative solutions that respond to contemporary environmental and industry challenges. A significant component of the module is training in the industry-standard digital pattern-cutting software LECTRA, enabling students to combine traditional craftsmanship with advanced digital skills highly valued by employers. The Design Realisation module forms the major component of the programme and runs across the second and third terms. During this module, students develop an independent project that reflects their personal interests and career ambitions within pattern cutting, design, or related fields. Drawing upon research, technical knowledge, and creative problem-solving skills, students explore advanced construction methods, experiment with innovative approaches, and engage with both traditional and digital technologies. The project encourages professional-level practice, portfolio development, and the creation of work that demonstrates a distinctive design identity while maintaining relevance to contemporary industry expectations and sustainable fashion practices. The Culture and Collaboration module broadens students’ perspectives through interdisciplinary engagement with the theme of “Cultural Emergency.” Working alongside students from other MA disciplines, participants explore social, cultural, and environmental issues through collaborative research and creative practice. This module develops advanced research, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills while encouraging students to reconsider their own practice within a wider creative context. Optional modules such as Professional Futures and Advancing Research Design: Maximising Your Methods provide opportunities for enhanced career planning and research development. Overall, the programme equips graduates with advanced pattern-cutting expertise, digital proficiency, creative confidence, and professional skills, preparing them for careers in fashion design, technical design, garment development, pattern cutting, entrepreneurship, or further research and academic study.
