COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Design: Products and Furniture programme is centred around a comprehensive Major Study Project that spans all three semesters and forms the core of the course, carrying a total of 120 credits. The project is structured around three key elements: Context and Rationale, Design and Development, and Realisation and Evaluation. Through these stages, students identify and investigate a design challenge, develop innovative solutions, and critically evaluate the outcomes of their work. In Semester One, students undertake Design Research Methods and Design Tools, which provide the theoretical, methodological, and technical foundations required for advanced design practice. These modules support the early stages of the Major Study Project by helping students define research questions, explore design opportunities, and develop appropriate creative approaches. During Semester Two, students study Professional Collaboration alongside the continuing Major Study Project. This module emphasises teamwork, interdisciplinary engagement, and professional practice, enabling students to work effectively with others while responding to industry and societal needs. In Semester Three, students focus exclusively on completing the Major Study Project, refining, realising, and evaluating their final design outcomes. Throughout the programme, students integrate research, creativity, technical development, and critical reflection to produce innovative and meaningful design solutions. This structure enables graduates to develop advanced professional skills, a strong portfolio, and a deep understanding of contemporary design practice.
