COURSE CURRICULUM

The Barristers Training Course (BTC) combined with the PGDL is structured around a set of core legal foundation modules designed to build a comprehensive understanding of the key areas of English and Welsh law, alongside professional and employability development. The programme begins with Constitutional and Administrative Law, which explores the structure of the state, the operation of government institutions, and the legal principles that govern public decision-making and judicial review. Students then study Contract Law, which develops an understanding of legally binding agreements and the rules that determine how contracts are formed, interpreted, and enforced. Criminal Law focuses on the principles governing criminal liability, offences, and defences within the legal system, while Land Law examines the legal rules relating to real property, ownership, and interests in land. Tort Law introduces students to civil wrongs and liability arising from harm or injury, covering key areas such as negligence and duty of care. Law of Trusts provides insight into equitable principles governing the holding and management of property on behalf of others. Another important component is Legal and Professional Environment (including EU Law), which introduces students to the structure and sources of the English legal system, while also providing foundational knowledge of European Union law and its institutions. In addition to these academic modules, students must complete an Employability component, which is a zero-credit requirement focused on career development. This can be fulfilled through approved legal work experience or participation in activities such as the NLS Magistrates Challenge, ensuring students gain practical exposure to the legal environment. Overall, the programme is designed to combine rigorous academic study with practical skill development, ensuring that students build a strong foundation across all major areas of law while also preparing for professional practice at the Bar.
