COURSE CURRICULUM
The LLM in International Energy Law is structured around a combination of one core module, five optional modules, and a dissertation, giving students both a strong foundational understanding and the flexibility to tailor their studies according to their interests and career goals. The core module, International Energy Transition Law and Regulation, focuses on the international legal framework governing natural resources and examines how global climate change concerns have influenced the development of law, policy, and regulation aimed at supporting the transition to renewable and low-carbon energy systems. It places particular emphasis on technologies and strategies that contribute to achieving carbon neutrality and net zero emissions targets, including renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower, as well as emerging low-carbon options like nuclear energy. Alongside the core module, students can choose five optional modules, which are designed to broaden and deepen their legal expertise across related fields. These include International Energy Investment Law, which examines legal issues surrounding cross-border energy investments; International Environmental and Climate Change Law, which focuses on global environmental governance and climate agreements; Corporate Social Responsibility, which explores ethical and regulatory responsibilities of organisations in global contexts; and International Dispute Resolution, which addresses mechanisms for resolving cross-border legal conflicts, particularly in commercial and energy-related disputes. Students are encouraged to select modules that complement their academic and professional objectives, although they may choose from any subject area depending on availability and interest. Finally, the programme concludes with a dissertation, allowing students to undertake independent, in-depth research on a specific topic within international energy law, demonstrating their analytical, research, and writing skills. The overall structure is designed to ensure both academic rigor and practical relevance, preparing graduates for careers in legal practice, policy development, international organisations, and the global energy sector. Optional modules are subject to availability and sufficient enrolment, as the university periodically reviews course content to maintain relevance, quality, and alignment with student and employer expectations.
