COURSE CURRICULUM

The LLM Human Rights curriculum provides a rigorous and comprehensive exploration of international human rights law, combining core legal principles with specialist options that examine the relationship between human rights, criminal justice, international law, conflict, and global governance. The core Human Rights module introduces students to the international frameworks, institutions, and enforcement mechanisms established to protect fundamental rights and freedoms worldwide. Students critically evaluate the effectiveness of international organisations, treaties, and legal procedures while examining both the substantive rights protected under international law and the mechanisms available for their enforcement. Building upon this foundation, a wide range of optional modules allows students to tailor their studies to specific interests. Human Rights and Criminal Justice examines the influence of international human rights standards on criminal justice systems and evaluates how these standards shape legal processes, policing, prosecution, detention, and the treatment of offenders. Public International and Humanitarian Law explores the legal principles governing relations between states during both peace and armed conflict, including the regulation of warfare and the growing significance of environmental protection within armed conflict situations. Terrorism and International Response investigates the legal, political, and ethical challenges associated with terrorism, analysing debates surrounding the distinction between terrorism and political resistance, as well as international responses to violent non-state actors. International Criminal Law provides an advanced study of the prosecution of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression, tracing the development of international criminal justice from the Nuremberg Trials to the International Criminal Court. Expression Rights: Art, Politics and Religion focuses on freedoms of expression, religion, belief, political participation, voting, and peaceful assembly, examining how these rights are protected and balanced against competing societal interests. Victimisation and Criminal Justice explores victims' rights within criminal justice systems, restorative justice approaches, and potential reforms aimed at improving victim protection and participation. Global Innovation and Intellectual Property examines patent law, innovation, public health, and sustainable development within both domestic and international contexts. The programme culminates in a Dissertation, enabling students to conduct independent research on a specialised human rights topic. Together, these modules develop advanced legal knowledge, critical analysis, research expertise, and policy evaluation skills, preparing graduates for careers in human rights advocacy, international organisations, governmental and non-governmental agencies, legal practice, criminal justice, policy development, humanitarian work, and academic research.
