COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Zoology programme provides a comprehensive study of animal biology, behaviour, evolution, and biodiversity, equipping students with the scientific knowledge and practical skills needed to understand the animal kingdom. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through modules covering Animal Behaviour, Animal Reproduction and Genetics, Animal Physiology, Pathogen Biology, Principles of Ecology, and Fundamentals of Taxonomy. These subjects introduce key biological concepts and the diversity of animal life while developing essential scientific understanding. In Year 2, students deepen their knowledge through specialist modules such as Vertebrate Zoology, Invertebrate Zoology, Physiology of Behaviour, and the Biology of Host-Parasite Relationships. They also develop research skills and gain experience working with Zoological Specimens and Collections, enhancing their understanding of animal classification, anatomy, and scientific investigation. In Year 3, students focus on advanced zoological topics through modules including Animal Cognition and Behaviour, Zoology Applications and Advances, and Zoology in the Field, which provides valuable practical fieldwork experience. An independent Dissertation allows students to conduct detailed research in an area of personal interest. Optional modules in Anthrozoology and Marine and Freshwater Ecology provide opportunities for further specialisation. This curriculum develops strong analytical, research, and fieldwork skills, preparing graduates for careers in wildlife conservation, ecological research, environmental management, education, museum curation, animal welfare, and other zoology-related professions.
