COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Zoo Biology programme provides a comprehensive understanding of the biology, management, welfare, and conservation of exotic and zoo-housed animal species. In Year 1, students develop a strong scientific foundation through modules covering Animal Physiology, Animal Husbandry, Animal Behaviour, Nutrition Principles, Animal Reproduction and Genetics, and Pathogen Biology. These subjects introduce the biological processes that influence animal health, welfare, and management. In Year 2, students build on this knowledge by exploring specialist topics such as Animal Cognition and Training, Physiology of Behaviour, Animal Nutritional Health, Zoo Conservation Genetics, and the role of modern zoos in conservation and education. An Introduction to Research module develops essential scientific investigation and analytical skills. In Year 3, the programme focuses on advanced study and professional application through modules including Welfare Science, Anthrozoology, and a Zoo Biology Field Course, which provides valuable practical experience in studying animals and their environments. Students also complete an independent Dissertation, allowing them to conduct in-depth research on a topic related to zoo biology or conservation. Optional modules in Adaptive Physiology and Applied Animal Nutrition offer opportunities for further specialisation. Throughout the course, students gain scientific knowledge, practical expertise, and research experience, preparing them for careers in zoos, wildlife parks, animal welfare organisations, conservation programmes, research institutions, and other sectors dedicated to the care, management, and conservation of exotic animal species.
