COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling curriculum integrates core psychological science with specialist training in counselling theory, practice, and interpersonal skills. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through Introduction to Psychology, Research Design and Practice (1), Analysing Data: Methods and Tools (1), Approaches to Counselling, Counselling Toolbox, and Counselling in Context. These modules introduce key psychological concepts, research methods, and the fundamental principles and practices of counselling. In Year 2, students deepen their understanding through Brain, Behaviour and Cognition: Understanding the Mind, Social Evolution and Individual Development, Research Design and Practice (2), and Analysing Data: Methods and Tools (2). Alongside these, they develop applied counselling skills through Analytical Thinking in Counselling and Personal and Professional Development in Counselling and Interpersonal Skills. Optional placement opportunities allow students to gain real-world experience in professional settings. In Year 3, students undertake a Psychology Research Project and study Psychological Applications to Work Settings and Client Issues in Counselling. A wide range of optional modules allows further specialization, including topics such as mental health, addiction, trauma, neuropsychology, ageing, family psychology, sleep, mindfulness, social behaviour, and offending behaviour. Throughout the program, students develop strong research, analytical, communication, and reflective practice skills, while gaining applied counselling competencies, preparing them for careers in mental health support, counselling pathways, psychological services, research, and related helping professions.
