The BSc (Hons) Psychology (Mental Health) curriculum combines core psychological knowledge with specialist study of mental health, wellbeing, and psychological disorders. In Year 1, students develop a strong foundation through modules such as Understanding the Self: Psychology 101, Psychology in Action (Mental Health), Exploring Psychological Impact and Change, Research Design and Practice (1), Analysing Data: Methods and Tools (1), and Developing Academic Skills in Psychology. These modules introduce key psychological theories, research methods, and the study of human behaviour and mental processes. In Year 2, students deepen their understanding through Brain, Behaviour and Cognition: Understanding the Mind, Social Evolution and Individual Development, Research Design and Practice (2) (Mental Health), Analytical Thinking in Mental Health, Contesting Mental Illness: The Psychology of Distress, and Analysing Data: Methods and Tools (2). These modules examine the psychological, biological, and social factors influencing mental health and distress. In Year 3, students undertake a Research Project in Mental Health Psychology and study Psychological Applications to Work Settings while selecting from a range of specialist modules. Optional topics include Psychopathology, Trauma in Children and Adolescents, Addictive Behaviours, Psychology and Trauma, Biological Perspectives on Mental Health and Wellbeing, Mindfulness, Sleep, Family Psychology, Ageing and Neurodegenerative Disease, and Community Psychology. Throughout the program, students develop advanced research, analytical, and critical-thinking skills while gaining specialist knowledge of mental health, preparing them for careers in healthcare, mental health services, research, community support, and related fields.
