COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Microbiology curriculum provides students with a comprehensive understanding of microorganisms and their roles in health, disease, biotechnology, and the environment. In Year 1, students establish a strong foundation in biological sciences through modules covering practical laboratory techniques, genetics, immunology, microbiology, biochemistry, physiology, and the study of living systems. These modules introduce the fundamental principles required to understand microbial life and its interactions with other organisms. In Year 2, students develop more specialised microbiological knowledge through the study of applied microbiology, clinical and public health microbiology, microbial metabolism and genetics, and the identification, structure, and distribution of microorganisms. They also explore host-pathogen interactions, gaining insight into how microorganisms cause disease and how the body responds to infection. The Professional Skills in Microbiology module helps students develop laboratory competence, scientific communication, teamwork, and employability skills. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics including forensic microbiology, molecular microbiology, immunology, virology, and the study and control of infectious diseases. A significant research project allows students to apply their knowledge and practical skills to an independent scientific investigation, developing expertise in experimental design, data analysis, and research methods. Together, these modules provide a strong balance of theoretical understanding and practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in microbiology, healthcare, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, public health, environmental science, research, and related scientific fields.
