COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Medicinal Chemistry curriculum provides a specialised education in chemistry with a strong focus on pharmaceutical science and drug development. In Year 1, students establish a solid foundation in the core areas of chemistry through modules covering organic structure and function, inorganic bonding, solid-state materials, physical states of matter, and analytical techniques such as spectroscopy and chromatography. Students also explore specialist areas of chemistry while developing essential academic, laboratory, and professional skills. In Year 2, the programme expands into more advanced topics, including organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry, alongside dedicated pharmaceutical chemistry studies. These modules deepen students’ understanding of chemical principles and their application to the discovery, development, and analysis of medicinal compounds. The Professional Practice module further develops employability, teamwork, and problem-solving skills through practical and industry-relevant experiences. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project, allowing them to apply their scientific knowledge and laboratory skills to a substantial investigation. Advanced modules in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and organic chemistry provide in-depth knowledge of drug design, chemical synthesis, and modern pharmaceutical science. Students can also specialise further by choosing between advanced chemical analysis or nano and green chemistry, enabling them to explore emerging areas of scientific research. Together, these modules develop strong analytical, experimental, and research capabilities, preparing graduates for careers in pharmaceutical research, drug development, biotechnology, healthcare, chemical industries, and postgraduate study.
