COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Geography programme provides a comprehensive understanding of physical and human geography, focusing on how global systems interact and how environmental and social challenges can be addressed. In the first year, students study foundational modules such as Geographies of Global Change, Weather and Climate, Geodiversity, Global Environmental Issues, Practical and Professional Skills, and Geographical Fieldwork. These introduce key concepts in earth systems, environmental processes, and essential academic and field-based skills. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through core modules including Principles and Practice in Geography, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Spatial Analysis, Global Climate Emergency, and Introduction to Research. Optional modules such as Sustainability, Natural Hazards and Disasters, River Dynamics and Management, International Development and Social Justice, and Environmental Change Fieldwork allow students to specialise in areas of interest. In the final year, students complete a Dissertation and study Contemporary Topics in Geography, alongside optional modules including Natural Resource Management, Drylands, Global Agriculture and Food Security, Applications of Remote Sensing, Energy for a Low Carbon Future, and Glaciers and Glaciation. The programme develops strong analytical, technical, and research skills, particularly in fieldwork and data analysis. Graduates are prepared for careers in environmental management, planning, sustainability, climate policy, and related fields where geographical expertise is essential.
