COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Ecology and Conservation programme provides students with a comprehensive understanding of ecological science, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable environmental management. In the first year, students build a strong scientific foundation through modules such as Principles of Ecology, Introduction to Plant Ecology, Biodiversity Conservation, Ecological Census Techniques, Animal Structure, Function and Adaptation, and Practical Conservation Skills. These modules introduce key ecological concepts, species identification, conservation methods, and practical fieldwork techniques. In the second year, students develop more advanced knowledge through Applied Habitat Management, Land Use Ecology, Introduction to Research, Environmental Monitoring and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Law and Policy, and Technical Skills. These subjects focus on habitat conservation, environmental monitoring, research methods, ecological data analysis, and the legal and policy frameworks that influence environmental management. During the final year, students undertake an independent Dissertation alongside core modules in Ecosystem Ecology and Ecology and Development Mitigation, exploring the interactions within ecosystems and the environmental impacts of development projects. Students can further specialise by choosing optional modules such as Africa Field Course, UK Field Course, Global Agriculture and Food Security, or Marine and Freshwater Ecology. These options provide opportunities to gain valuable field experience and explore specific areas of ecological interest. Throughout the programme, students combine classroom learning with practical and field-based experiences, developing scientific, analytical, and conservation skills that prepare them for careers in ecology, conservation, environmental consultancy, sustainability, research, and natural resource management.
