COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Computer Science and Mathematics programme combines advanced computing with mathematical theory, providing students with the analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills needed for a wide range of technology-focused careers. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in calculus, data analysis, linear algebra, computer programming, and systems analysis and design. These modules develop essential mathematical reasoning and programming abilities while introducing the principles that underpin modern computing systems. During the second year, students expand their knowledge through the study of probability and statistical inference, mathematical enterprise, systems software, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and software design and implementation. They can further specialise by choosing between linear algebra and its applications or cryptography and computational complexity, allowing them to explore advanced mathematical and computational concepts. In the final year, students undertake a project and professional skills module that enables them to apply their knowledge to a substantial independent investigation. Core studies in graph theory and combinatorics, together with artificial intelligence, provide insight into important areas of mathematics and computing. Students can then tailor their degree through optional modules in machine learning, stochastic processes, optimisation, cloud computing, mobile platform applications, distributed database engineering, or advanced software engineering. Throughout the programme, students develop strong quantitative, analytical, and programming skills while gaining experience in applying mathematical techniques to computational challenges. These capabilities prepare graduates for careers in software development, data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, finance, research, and other technology-driven industries.
