COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Chemistry programme is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the major branches of chemistry while allowing students to develop specialist interests as they progress. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules covering organic structure and function, inorganic bonding and solid-state materials, physical states of matter, spectroscopic and chromatographic analysis, professional development, and an introduction to specialist areas of chemistry. The second year deepens knowledge across the core disciplines of organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry, while also focusing on professional practice. Students can tailor their studies by choosing an optional module in pharmaceutical chemistry, modern-day materials, or applied instrumental analysis. In the final year, students undertake advanced chemistry studies alongside an independent research project, enabling them to apply their knowledge and develop critical scientific skills. Students further specialise by selecting two advanced modules from organic, inorganic, or physical chemistry and one additional option from advanced chemical analysis, chemotherapeutics, or nano and green chemistry. This balanced curriculum combines theoretical knowledge, practical laboratory experience, professional development, and research training, ensuring graduates gain a broad understanding of chemistry while developing expertise in areas that match their interests and career aspirations. The programme prepares students for employment in scientific industries, research, or further postgraduate study.
