COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) programme provides students with a strong scientific and practical understanding of human health, disease, and modern diagnostic techniques through a combination of laboratory training and academic study. In the first year, students build a foundation in biomedical sciences through modules covering biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, immunology, physiology, living systems, and practical biological techniques. These subjects introduce the core scientific principles needed to understand the human body and disease processes. During the second year, students develop more specialised knowledge in areas such as clinical biochemistry, immunopharmacology, public health microbiology, metabolism, and biomolecular structure and function. Practical laboratory modules help students strengthen their technical skills and understand how biomedical science is applied within healthcare and diagnostic settings. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics including immunology, virology, haematology, transfusion practice, infectious diseases, and cellular pathology. Students also complete an independent research project that develops critical thinking, laboratory research, and analytical skills. Throughout the programme, students gain hands-on experience using professional laboratory equipment and procedures similar to those found in NHS and research laboratories. Overall, the course prepares graduates with the scientific knowledge, practical expertise, and professional skills needed for careers in biomedical laboratories, healthcare services, research, and the wider life sciences industry.
