COURSE CURRICULUM

The BMus (Hons) Songwriting and Vocal Performance curriculum develops students’ creative, technical, and professional skills for careers in songwriting and performance within the contemporary music industry. In Year 1, students build foundational abilities through modules such as Instrumental Technique & Performance, Songwriting in Popular Music, Music Industry in Numbers, Instrumental Technique & Live Performance, Songwriting for Contemporary Music Styles, and DAW Skills. These modules introduce essential performance techniques, songwriting principles, digital audio workstation skills, and an understanding of the music industry. In Year 2, students progress to more advanced practice through Principal Instrument & Industry Practice, Commercial Songwriting Practice, Co Lab: Research, Exploration and Risk-taking, Principal Instrument & Public Performance, and Developing the Songwriter. Optional modules such as Music Video, Songwriting and Live Performance, and Applying World Rhythms to Performance and Composing allow further creative exploration and specialization. In Year 3, students focus on professional development and industry readiness through Industry Briefs, Future Pathways, Advanced Songwriting Practice, and a Final Capstone Project with Preproduction and final execution stages. Throughout the program, students refine their songwriting voice, performance confidence, and technical production skills while gaining experience in collaboration and creative experimentation. The course prepares graduates for careers in songwriting, vocal performance, music production, and broader roles within the evolving global music and creative industries.
