COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering curriculum provides students with a comprehensive understanding of engineering principles, design processes, and modern technological applications through a balance of theoretical study and practical experience. In Year 1, students develop a strong foundation in engineering through modules covering engineering science, mathematics, technical computing, innovation, mechanics, dynamics, and thermofluids. These subjects introduce the fundamental concepts required to analyse and solve engineering problems while developing essential technical and analytical skills. In Year 2, students expand their knowledge through the study of digital systems, computer engineering, engineering modelling, simulation techniques, materials, manufacturing processes, and control systems. They also gain valuable practical experience through industrial design case studies and an integrated group design project that develops teamwork, project management, and problem-solving abilities. In the final year, students focus on advanced engineering topics including performance engineering, robotics, and an individual engineering project that allows them to apply their knowledge to a substantial independent piece of work. Students can further tailor their studies by choosing optional modules in areas such as sensors and embedded electronics, human factors engineering, sustainability in engineering design, Industry 4.0 technologies, or mechanical engineering in sport. Together, these modules develop strong technical, computational, design, and project management skills while providing experience with modern engineering tools and practices. The programme prepares graduates for careers in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, robotics, energy, product development, and a wide range of engineering sectors.
