COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Engineering BEng (Hons) programme provides students with a strong combination of engineering knowledge, medical science, and practical problem-solving skills across three years of study. In the first year, students develop a foundation in engineering science, mathematics, technical computing, innovation, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and material chemistry. These subjects help students understand both engineering principles and the biological systems involved in healthcare and medical technology. During the second year, students expand their technical expertise through modules in digital systems, computer engineering, engineering modelling, biomedical imaging, sensing technologies, tissue engineering, biomaterials, and biocompatibility. Students also gain valuable teamwork and design experience through integrated group projects and industrial case studies that reflect real engineering and healthcare challenges. In the final year, students focus on advanced and professional aspects of biomedical engineering, including performance engineering, medical ethics, clinical trials, regulation, and current developments within the industry. An individual engineering project allows students to apply their knowledge independently and strengthen research and analytical skills. Optional modules provide opportunities to specialise in areas such as machine learning, sustainability, human factors engineering, sensors, and Industry 4.0 technologies. Overall, the programme prepares graduates with the technical, practical, and professional skills needed for careers in biomedical engineering, healthcare technology, medical research, and related industries.
