COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Sociology and Criminology curriculum offers an integrated study of crime, justice, and society through a combination of sociological theory and criminological analysis. In Year 1, students build a foundational understanding through modules such as Images of Crime and Criminal Justice, Constructing Crime, Foundations of Social Theory, Privilege and Power: Understanding Social Inequalities, Sociology at Work, and Study and Research Skills. These modules introduce key concepts in how crime is socially constructed, alongside core sociological ideas about inequality, power, and research methods. In Year 2, students deepen their knowledge with modules including Rethinking Social and Criminal Justice, Explaining Crime, Constructing Modern Societies, Applied Social Research, and a Service Learning Placement that links academic learning with real-world experience. Optional modules allow exploration of topics such as gender, sexuality, education, religion, politics, and social justice. In Year 3, students focus on advanced theoretical and applied study through Theorising Contemporary Society, Sociology of Work and Career, and a Research Project. A wide range of optional modules further develops specialist interests, including Media and Crime, Cultural Criminology, Crime, Race and Empire, Gender and Crime, Digital Culture and Society, Political Violence and Terror, and Sociology of Harm. Throughout the programme, students develop strong analytical, research, and critical-thinking skills while gaining a deep understanding of how crime, inequality, and social structures interact in contemporary society, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, research, policy, and related fields.
