COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Photography curriculum is designed to develop students’ creative, technical, and critical understanding of contemporary photography through a progressive three-year structure. In Year 1, students establish a strong foundation by studying History, Context and Near-Future of Photography, Exploring Photography, and Situating Photography. These modules introduce the historical, cultural, and theoretical dimensions of photography while encouraging experimentation with photographic techniques and visual storytelling. In Year 2, students expand their creative practice through modules such as Co Lab: Research, Exploration and Risk-taking, Photography and the World, and Live Assignments. These modules emphasize collaboration, professional engagement, research-led practice, and the development of innovative approaches to photography. Students also have the opportunity to personalize their studies through optional modules including Materials and Making, Publishing: Experimental Formats, Typography: Use and Expression, Telling Stories, Digital Marketing and Communication, Encountering Objects, Music Video, and Sound Art and Design. These options allow students to broaden their creative and professional skills across different media and communication platforms. In Year 3, the focus shifts towards advanced creative practice and professional preparation through modules such as The Recent Past and Near Future of Creative Storytelling, Workspace, and First Edition. Students refine their individual artistic voice, develop major projects, and build a professional portfolio, preparing them for successful careers within photography, visual communication, and the wider creative industries.
