COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Media and Philosophy curriculum combines media studies and philosophical inquiry to help students develop critical, analytical, and creative skills for understanding contemporary society. In Year 1, students build a foundation in media analysis by studying media texts, media industries, ethics, personal identity, and self-understanding. Optional modules allow students to further explore media literacy or applied philosophical issues. In Year 2, students deepen their knowledge through modules examining media theory, society, global philosophical traditions, and the relationship between individuals and the wider world. Students can personalise their studies through interdisciplinary options such as intercultural communication and language inequality, alongside specialist media modules covering popular music, media research, and short film production. Philosophy options explore argumentation, critical reasoning, mental health, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis, providing diverse perspectives on human thought and behaviour. In the final year, students undertake a major independent project in either media or philosophy, allowing them to conduct in-depth research in an area of personal interest. Additional modules examine social change, consumer culture, media production, popular culture, morality, communication, power, and the relationship between philosophy, film, and media. Throughout the programme, students develop strong research, communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and critical thinking skills. The combination of media expertise and philosophical analysis prepares graduates for careers in media, journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, education, policy, research, and other professions that value intellectual curiosity and effective communication.
