COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Linguistics and Philosophy curriculum combines the study of language, communication, and philosophical inquiry, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of how meaning, thought, and human interaction are shaped. In Year 1, students develop a foundation in linguistics through the study of morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, while also exploring ethical questions, personal identity, and self-understanding through philosophy. Optional modules allow students to further investigate language in society or contemporary issues in applied philosophy. In Year 2, students deepen their knowledge by examining complex language-related issues, global philosophical traditions, and the relationship between individuals and the wider world. Students can personalise their studies through optional modules covering intercultural communication, communication disorders, language and social justice, community language use, argumentation and critical reasoning, and the connections between philosophy, mental health, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis. In the final year, students complete major independent projects in both linguistics and philosophy, enabling them to conduct in-depth research in areas of personal interest. Additional optional modules explore topics such as language and health, forensic linguistics, philosophy and media, morality and ethics, and the relationship between language, communication, and power. Together, these modules develop advanced skills in critical thinking, research, communication, analysis, and problem-solving, preparing graduates for careers in education, communications, public policy, research, media, public service, and other professions requiring strong analytical and interpersonal abilities.
