COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Linguistics and Media curriculum combines the study of language with media and communication, enabling students to develop a comprehensive understanding of how language influences society, culture, and media practices. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation in linguistics through modules covering morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, while also exploring media industries and the analysis of media texts. Students further examine issues relating to identity, agency, and culture, with opportunities to study language in social contexts or develop media literacy skills. In Year 2, the focus expands to more advanced topics, including language-related challenges, media theory, and the relationship between individuals and the wider world. Students can personalise their studies through optional modules in areas such as intercultural communication, communication disorders, language and social justice, community language use, popular music analysis, media research, and short film production. In the final year, students undertake major independent projects in both linguistics and media, allowing them to apply their knowledge and research skills to topics of personal interest. Additional modules explore themes such as language and health, forensic linguistics, consumer culture, media production, and representations of the body in popular culture. Together, these modules develop strong analytical, research, communication, and creative skills, preparing graduates for careers in media, communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, research, and other language-related professions.
