COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Journalism curriculum is designed to develop students into skilled, adaptable, and professionally prepared journalists through a combination of practical training, academic study, and industry-focused learning. In Year 1, students gain a strong foundation in journalism through modules covering journalism practice, media law, public affairs, journalism studies, and the relationship between journalism and society. These modules introduce essential reporting, research, writing, and critical analysis skills while providing an understanding of the legal, political, and social contexts in which journalists operate. In Year 2, students advance their practical abilities through Journalism Practice modules, while developing specialist knowledge in media law and data-driven investigative journalism. They also undertake shorthand training as part of the NCTJ Diploma, a valuable professional qualification highly regarded within the industry. Optional modules allow students to explore areas such as ethics and representation, sports journalism, photojournalism, and political journalism. In the final year, students refine their professional expertise through Advanced Journalism Practice and a major Journalism Project that showcases their reporting and storytelling skills. Additional modules provide opportunities to study magazine journalism, public relations and communications, podcasting, and the social impact of celebrity culture and media representation. Together, these modules equip graduates with strong communication, research, digital media, and storytelling skills, preparing them for careers in journalism, broadcasting, public relations, communications, and related media industries.
