COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History programme offers a broad and in-depth exploration of historical periods, themes, and approaches, helping students understand how the past is interpreted and connected to the present. In the first year, students study foundational modules such as Europe since 1789: Revolution to Referendum, Rewriting the Conquest of Mexico: Burying the White Gods, Medieval and Early Modern Society, Making History, History Matters, and America 1607–2020: From Colony to Superpower. These introduce key historical debates, methods, and global perspectives across different eras. In the second year, students develop more advanced analytical and practical skills through The Historian’s Craft, History in Action, and Tudors and Stuarts: Rulers and Representations. Optional modules such as Fascism Past and Present, Money Matters: Finance Past and Present, Object Lessons: The Stuff of History, and The Northern Ireland Troubles… and Beyond allow for specialised study. The final year focuses on independent research through the History Major Project and Representing History, alongside optional modules including Women and Gender in the Pre-Modern World, The Apocalypse in History and Culture, Legacies and Memories of Conflict, The Global Struggle for Civil and Human Rights, and History Online: the Value and Values of History. The programme builds strong research, analytical, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, heritage, journalism, policy, and related fields.
