COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History with Politics programme combines the study of historical development with the analysis of political systems, ideas, and contemporary global issues. It is designed to help students understand how past events shape present-day politics and how political decisions influence historical trajectories across different societies. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Europe since 1789: Revolution to Referendum, Making History, History Matters, America 1607–2020: From Colony to Superpower, Politics, and Young Citizens, Place & Belonging. These introduce key historical periods and essential political concepts. In the second year, students deepen their understanding through The Historian’s Craft, History in Action, and Justice, Ethics, and Democracy. Optional history modules include Fascism Past and Present, Money Matters: Finance Past and Present, and The Northern Ireland Troubles… and Beyond, while politics options include UK Parliamentary Studies, Contemporary European Politics, Security Studies, Environmental Politics and Policy, and Global Political Marketing. In the final year, students complete a History Major Project and study Representing History alongside Leadership, Activism, and Campaigning. Optional modules cover areas such as British Politics in Uncertain Times, US Politics and Policy, Political Violence and Terror, Feminist Thought and Praxis, and Global Politics of Pop Culture. The programme develops strong analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in government, politics, journalism, public policy, education, and international organisations.
