COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History and Linguistics programme combines the study of historical change with the scientific analysis of language, offering students an interdisciplinary understanding of how societies, communication, and cultural systems develop over time. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through history modules such as Europe since 1789: Revolution to Referendum and America 1607–2020: From Colony to Superpower, alongside linguistics modules including Morphology and Syntax and Semantics and Pragmatics. These are supported by Transformations: Agency and Self, which introduces key themes about identity and society. In the second year, students develop deeper analytical skills through The Historian’s Craft and Problems of Language, while exploring broader themes in Transformations: Agency and World. Optional history modules include Fascism Past and Present and Money Matters: Finance Past and Present, while linguistics options include Communications Disorders, Language and Local Community, and Language, Inequality and Social Justice. Interdisciplinary study is supported through modules such as Intercultural Communication at Work. In the final year, students complete both a History Major Project and a Major Project in Linguistics, alongside Transformations: Agency and Social Change. Optional modules include Women and Gender in the Pre-Modern World, The Apocalypse in History and Culture, Legacies and Memories of Conflict, Language and Health, and Forensic Linguistics. The course builds strong research, analytical, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in research, education, policy, communication, and related professional fields.
