COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design programme develops creative designers capable of producing innovative, functional, and ethically informed products for contemporary markets. In the first year, students are introduced to core principles through modules such as Introduction to Design, Design Tools, Materials and Production, Design Context, Identity and Sustainable Responsibility, and Design through Inquisitive Making. These establish foundational skills in design thinking, making processes, and critical awareness of sustainability and user needs. In the second year, students build on this foundation with more advanced study in Professional Practice, Advanced Design Tools, Materials and Production, Sustainability, Materials and Processes, an Elective Design Project, and Exploring Materials and Processes. This stage strengthens technical ability while encouraging experimentation and independent thinking, with a continued focus on responsible and sustainable design approaches. In the final year, students refine their personal design identity through modules including Exploration and Context, a Commercial Project, and a Self-Directed Project, culminating in a Degree Show Exhibition that showcases their work to industry audiences. The course combines practical making skills with conceptual development and professional preparation, encouraging students to engage with real-world design challenges. Graduates leave with the ability to work across furniture and product design, creative manufacturing, and related fields, equipped with strong technical expertise, critical thinking skills, and a clear individual design direction suited to contemporary creative industries.
