COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Film & TV and Philosophy programme combines the study of visual media with philosophical inquiry to explore how ideas about ethics, identity, knowledge, and society are represented and challenged through film and television. In the first year, students engage with foundational modules such as Ethics in the 21st Century and Knowing the Self: From Wonder to Wisdom, alongside Film and TV style in close-up and The Bigger Picture: core concepts, contexts and debates in film and television studies. These are supported by themes of identity and interpretation through Transformations: Agency and Self, with optional study in Applied Philosophy or International Ciné-Club. In the second year, students deepen their understanding through World Philosophy and Putting Film and TV into practice, while exploring broader social themes in Transformations: Agency and World. Optional philosophy modules include How to Win Every Argument and Happiness and Mental Health: Philosophy, Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, while film options include British Cinema, Analysing British Television, and Film Programming. In the final year, students complete major independent projects in both Philosophy and Film and Television, supported by advanced modules such as Philosophy, Film and Media, Being Good: The Foundations of Morality, and Language, Communication and Power, alongside specialised film studies topics. The course develops advanced critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in media, education, research, publishing, journalism, and other creative and analytical fields.
