COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English programme offers a comprehensive exploration of literature, language, culture, and critical thinking while developing strong communication, research, and analytical skills. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through modules such as Literary Pasts, Presents and Futures, Reading the Future, Writing in a UNESCO City of Literature, Global Narratives in English, Ways of Reading, and The Book Group. These modules introduce students to diverse literary traditions, critical approaches, and the cultural significance of literature across different periods and contexts. In the second year, students deepen their understanding through core modules including Literary Practices: Writing, Editing, Publishing, Rebel Literatures, and Imagining the Sustainable World, which explore literary production, social change, and contemporary global issues. Students can also choose from a range of optional modules such as Shakespeare and Co: Early Modern Drama, Romantic Revolutions, Black Writing in Britain, Working with Scripts, Intercultural Communication at Work, and Language, Inequality and Social Justice, allowing them to specialise in areas of personal interest. In the final year, students undertake significant independent work through the English Major Project, The Critical Dissertation, Staff-Student Research Project Pathway, and The English Graduate Portfolio. They also select three optional modules, including Contemporary Literature, Culture and Theory, Writing Justice, Changing Worlds, Early Modern Poetry and Prose: Nation, Self, Other, and Gothic Rebels and Reactionaries. The programme prepares graduates for careers in publishing, media, education, communications, marketing, creative industries, and many other professional fields requiring advanced critical and communication skills.
